What is the Apostille?

The Apostille is a unique certification, which serves the purpose of validating the authenticity of public or private documents with official approval in foreign territory. These documents must be issued in a member country of the "Convenio de la Apostilla" to be used in one of those countries. 

• Through this unique procedure, there is no need for any other type of certification. An apostilled document issued in a foreign country does not require additional certification.
  
• Foreign documents must be apostilled from the country of origin. If the apostille cannot be obtained, the document in question may be duly legalized by the Chilean Consulate of the applicant's country of origin and by the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores in Chile.

IMPORTANT:

Please note that the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores states that:

- On documents issued or legalized in our Chilean consular network abroad and those issued by foreign consular representations in Chile, only the original document signed in handwriting by the consular agent may be legalized. Scanned copies cannot be legalized.

What does the legalization of documents issued abroad consist of?

• Documents issued abroad will not be apostilled in Chile. In order for documents to be valid in the country, they must have been previously certified by the competent local authority and legalized by the corresponding Chilean Consulate.
•  Documents signed before the Chilean Consul or Minister of faith, prior to the procedure, (the original) must be legalized by the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores of Chile.

• We remind you that apostilled foreign documents must NOT be legalized by the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores of Chile.
